“Incredibles” Ben and George display a full arsenal of tricks in true Dad-Kid fashion

There is nothing that epitomises our Club’s ethos more than a Dad and his son playing in the same match. Usually they play in opposite teams, fighting each other with a cruel inter-generational rivalry (think Master Game), but sometimes they end up in the same team.
That’s what happened today when Ben and George both decided to wear a Bib, joining Francesco, Diego and young Yasin. Against them there was a tough unbibbed team that included TonyL, Hannes, Johannes and young Kilim.
The chemistry between Ben and his son on the pitch was undeniable. The two looked for each other constantly, exchanging the ball with telepathic precision and displaying a full arsenal of tricks. Inevitably, the goals started to arrive.
The Unbibs could count on a Johannes in stellar form, but most of his efforts were frustrated by Diego in goal, ready to close every possible angle to the shooters. Further frustration for the Unbibs came because their attacking play was stopped several times when one of the red post unexpectedly felt on the ground. Some of the pundits argued for a while on whether this was caused deliberately by Diego planting the post weakly, but a later investigation from the Post Police exonerated the argentian from this charge, concluding that it was only an unfortunate coincidence.
Still, despite of their apparent superiority (and luck) the Bibs were never able to get more than one goal ahead. The Unbibs managed to stay in the game until the very last moment, eventually losing 6-5 but redeeming themselves with a Golden Goal.
The jury decided to award a double Player of the Match prize to Ben and George, recognising their amazing interplay. “I was astonished to see how they seemed to understand each other” said the Sky commentator, comparing the interplay between them to what Vialli and Mancini showed when they played together for Sampdoria. The two Italians were known as the “gemelli del goal” (“goal twins”), and actually George has a twin. Coincidences? Maybe, or maybe signs of supernatural abilities of the Holden family. Should we call them the Incredibles?
With today’s match we can consider the pre-season over. Next week we should welcome back Giancarlo, who has recently been busy celebrating his 60th birthday hiking the Tre Cime) and Hossam who is preparing for his charity family triathlon (for a noble cause read more here). More and more players will be back. Red post will leave space to the proper (and larger) goals. Things will get damn serious. Stay tuned.
